It was a sweltering 104 in the shade the day that Summer was born north of the Bay area California. Her name is the result of that particular heat wave. No stranger to show business, she grew up in a family that made their careers in the film industry. Music was always a big part of her life. At family get togethers and school, Summer would absorb the sounds around her, and impress her family and friends with her own renditions of popular tunes. By the time she settled in Victoria, she possessed a firm grasp of turning out a song with her own trademark sound. It wasn't long before she became a regular at the blues jams sitting in with the cornerstone groups of the local scene. ""Dave Harris wouldn't let me out of the place without singing at least a couple"" she recalls. But the crowd would rarely let her off without doing a whole set. Soon she became a regular guest with Harris' band and was featured as a guest on several of of his CDs. She also performed with Jim Giboshe (Harp Dog Brown) and Willie MacCalder (Powder Blues) during that period - a time that provided some great opportunities to hone her craft. Audiences immediately took to Summer's hard hitting blues - the kind that betray her somewhat shy exterior. It is this combination of guts and vulnerablity that is so engaging. She could take a blues standard, often the only choice in a jam situation, and put a new spin on it - an approach that would breathe new life into an old song. No easy task for material that in many cases has been through the wringer. ""So many of those tunes just felt right. Of course the Etta (James) and Koko (Taylor) songs have something that most women can relate to. But some of my favourites come from male singers. They just spoke to me."" Summer is an exciting new voice on the scene. And she is finding her way. She has found the means and opportunity to showcase at numerous festival and concert events and the crowds just can't get enough. The Victoria R&B Festival, the Women in Need Benefit Concerts, and the Victoria Blues Fest expect nothing less than a mainstage attraction when inviting Summer to perform. And at dances and parties - look out - anything could happen! ????
