In 1989 this Irish Native Americans musical path led to promotional raps for radio dj Mark In The Dark on station KGGI/99.1. Always upbeat, Shadow's work back then had a positive buzz and displayed his natural gift for rhyming in time. The gig lasted a couple of years, giving Shadow a knack for production and groove.
In 1992 he then got heavily in to bass, then added drums, guitar and singing to the mix of his trick bag. Shadow pulls music out of most anything that's put in his hands. Like all the better musician, he doesn't just copy his influences; he absorbs things and puts his own spin on them.
He continued writing original songs and playing the club circuit with the group
A.O.S. and opening for such acts as The Skelitones. He sings from the heart
and writes about life from the inside out. He doesn't like tags but cornered will admit to wide-range influences from The Police and Men At Work to Big Band Swing and Sammy Davis Jr. or funk-masters such as George Clinton and The Meters, and satire artists like ""Weird Al"" Yankovic and Spike Jones. Shadow's orginals have wide dynamics and emotional deths. He's more into truth than appearances. The music is real.
In 2002 Shadow hosted a radio program called The Unknown. He featured local independent artists that illustrated his affection and understanding of styles as far-flug as Hip-Hop, Country, Blues, Jazz, Reggae, Alternative, Emo, and Hard Rock. Listeners were treated to Shadow's sly humor in between cuts and audience responed enthusiastically with call -in comments and requests.
Two A.O.S. albums demonstrate Shadow's alternative sounds. The side project Rezination spans funky-to-fusion instrmental fireworks. Then there's Darin' To Be Darin, Shadows tribute to all-star performer Bobby Darin. There arent't many artists willing to tear down the walls the way Shadow does. More's the pity in this world of lookalike/soundalike imitation wannabe's
Listening to just one album project of Shadow's gives a myopic impression of his work.
Each album has continuity and focus but the styles vary depending on where he's heading at the time. Unlike more predictable musicians who have ""a sound"" and stick with it, Shadow has a pocket full of sounds that stech from point to point as he navigates the mysteries, joys and trials of life.
He's produced four albums so far with more ahead. What's next? The Shadow Knows..........................
