Coming soon to IACmusic.com: True Streaming
Hello IAC Artists,
From the beginning you have had your music available for streaming on the IACmusic.com website. But has it been "true streaming"?
Actually, like most websites we have been using progressive streaming, in which the mp3 file being played on the listener's system is actually partially stored, temporarily, locally, where the song could potentially be captured and saved.
IAC will now be converting our streaming to use Flash Media Server which uses "true streaming", not progressive streaming. This means that media streamed from Flash Media Server to Flash Player is not stored locally in the listener's cache or anywhere on the listener's hard drive. There is no configuration on the listener's system necessary.
The project we have undertaken is a large and costly one, but in two weeks or thereabouts, all streaming at IAC will be true streaming, and this will apply to all IAC music players on artist pages, stations and on exported IAC music players on web sites and pages anywhere on the web.
We will also have the ability to host and stream videos, rather than just incorporate references to videos posted elsewhere.
Besides protection of content, true streaming greatly reduces web server load, making the entire site run and load faster; and it makes the streaming experience itself much more enjoyable to the listener. No more waiting for a stream to start, no buffering - just a smooth and consistent stream that starts on demand.
True streaming also brings a new degree of accuracy and scope to songplay-related statistics.
It's something we can all look forward to enjoying soon, and something that reflects Neil's vision and plans to raise the bar ever higher, complementing and further strengthening the new outlook for a bright future at IACMusic.com!

Sounds great. Will it involve changing our players/stations or will it happen "behind the scenes"?

Yes Chandra, it will happen automatically "behind the scenes". IAC music players on artist pages, stations and on exported IAC music players on web sites and pages anywhere on the web will be true streaming automatically when the project is completed.

Hi Dave,
I emailed in December asking IAC about licensing cover songs and streaming but still don't have an answer. Just emailed IAC support again today. Can you double check with them and get back to me?
Many thanks,
~Lace~

Are current counts radically understated, possibly due to this change?
