I think we're at the right place at the right time
For major record labels, sales are down, the cost to promote an artist is up. When net revenues are down, corporations start to trim the fat. Record labels will have to adjust their business model to remain profitable, resulting in reduced services. Most likely they will become more conservative with their investments and more hesitant to sign new artists.
Artists and bands need to recognize this trend and learn how to continue to build their fan bases and sales on their own. Or at least with the help of people that share the vision.
Is this wild speculation? Maybe. Anything can change at any time. But if the current trends continue I see this as the natural consequences.
Anyhow, we need a lot more resources to fully realize the dream but I really believe we're headed in the right direction and have surpassed the barriers that have held up any type of artist movement in the past.

Thanks for that Maria. It's totally in line with everything I've been saying, especially the quotes from Paste Magazine (which usually favors the underground anyway). I've got another article about Sandi Thom who gathered a fan base quickly by doing a series of live webcasts here. Now she signed the major label contract when it was offered to her but it's amazing what the right kind of promotion on the internet can do for an unknown these days.
