Picture the smokey psychedlic scene in my room in the west end of Aberdeen, Scotland, 1988.
So, I had been playing for a little while, mainly jamming along with some grooves and had built up a little rep, as well as some recordings, I was living in 1 room in a shared apartment, batchelor pad, with a couple of art students on the peripherals,
"I'm going to release an album, on tape", I was telling my musical dreams to an old friend from our mispent youth,
We had been listening to a Zappa album, and my old chum could see the sleeve, or the record, "Barking Pumpkin Records"...
I said "I need a name, a stage name," he instantly replied "Pumpkin Man"... I love it, Thanks! was my immediate reaction,
Anyway, thats that nailed for everyone who wondered where it was nicked from.
honest....

This is kinda true...
When I first coined the phrase "Data Thieves" in the nineties, I was inspired by Soul2Soul maestro Jazzy B as he narrated a piece describing the journey of "The Data Thief" through the wastelands of the late twentieth century,
"Data Thieves" was my adjective for describing the "new" musical genre of cutting beats and samples in hip hop, jungle, and electronica to suggest a context other than the composers original intent, so it was an obvious choice of band/artist name.
Long since an innovater, jazz improviser and synth player(through necessity), in my search for band members to help create a new music I had reached a point of futility as upcoming musicians aspired to a sea of post sharon osbourne mainstream conformist monoculture.
I cast aside my techno phobia and embraced the new era of "acid for the masses" cracked and hacked software, who needs a band with a p233 and an sb16....
I looked to the internet, and typed "Data Thieves", 0 results, did you mean "Data Thief"?, of which there was only one, a bb user name.
Well look what happens if you type "Data Thieves" into Yahoo now...
