Her Hymn
And it's not even my birthday - a new DH song. I was recording some bass lines for someone else's work today, and I was trying to explain my ideas about each song having its own dynamic, being full/spare/busy/fast/slow etc, in all the places where it's needed; had I had this song to hand, I could have just played it instead of prattling. The snare drum is an inspired touch, there's some mean lead, and it could probably go without saying that the vocals and guitars are of a high enough standard to support a lyric so good, it squeezes your heart in a mighty strong fist [stop press - lyrics now available]

More Than You Know
The pizzicato violin won me over before the song had even got into its stride, so the rest of this review is highly suspect... in fact, forget it, have a listen yourself, the keyboard yanking you away from the expected harmony is worth the price of admission alone

Indiscriminate Act of Kindness
Two IAC artists, whose opinions I respect, separately urged me to listen to this guy. So I did, and remembered what this place is all about. Wondrous guitar - open-tuned? - a voice that sounds so-so at first, then twists and grabs you by the windpipe, compelling attention - in comes a bass of the style I always tell aspiring players to adopt, 'less is more' - oh that harmony - A lyric, too, that underlines another rule, don't write words unless you're saying something that will touch people in parts of themselves they may not yet know exist. In short, have an epic, a story, a snapshot, a scene viewed by lightning, but just have something that will stay with the listener. Marvellous, in the original sense of the word

I'm indebted to what may be the best-named station on IAC for this one (http://iacmusic.com/station.aspx?StationID=54). Moody acoustic, lyrics that flick the back of your ear and say 'oy, pay attention...' Then in comes a lead guitar, from nowhere, that slams you back in your chair, setting you up for a really beyond belief finale

[amended review] Note: parental advisory. This lad's a one-off, more front than Blackpool, but if you've read Last Exit to Brooklyn, and were haunted by the story of Tralala, then you'll get this one

Acoustic, Brian Wilson-y, just the thing to go off to sleep with. Interesting harmonies here, and the interplay between the bottleneck and the near-Theremin keyboard is really intriguing
