Ed Whitfield of Kentucky takes slaughter issue personally By James R. Carroll jcarroll@courier-journal.com The Courier-Journal Kentucky U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield is from a state synonymous with horses, represents a district full of horse owners and is a leading advocate in Congress for banning horse slaughter in the United States. His resolve to stop the practice was cemented by a trip in 2004 to a central Pennsylvania horse auction. There, he witnessed how, with the exchange of a few hundred dollars, horses go from a farm to a slaughterhouse and then to dinner tables in Japan and Europe. U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield and his wife, Connie, (PICTURED ABOVE), visited with two animals they bought at auction and nursed back to health Spitfire, a miniature horse, and Mr. Ed, a draft horse. Connie Whitfield is vice chairman of the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority. Connie Whitfield said Spitfire and Mr. Ed are "like poster children for rescued horses." A slaughter-ban bill her husband co-sponsored is scheduled to come up in the House this week. (Photos by Michael Clevenger, The Courier-Journal) Whitfield and his wife, Connie, were shocked and saddened by what they saw as nonchalance at the auction. "You don't even know killer buyers are bidding on these horses," he said in an interview with The Courier-Journal. The Whitfields had no intention of buying a horse until Connie Whitfield saw the miniature black horse with the bushy mane and the big, white Percheron draft horse. Nobody else wanted them. They were probably headed for slaughter. Now Spitfire, the little horse bought for $150, and Mr. Ed, a $245 draft horse, graze side by side at Walnut Hall Ltd., a friend's farm next to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. "They are quite a sight," said Whitfield, a Republican whose 1st District encompasses Western Kentucky. The mismatched equines are a personal symbol for the couple's fight for a horse-slaughter ban that has gained national attention. A new slaughter-ban bill, co-sponsored with Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., is scheduled to come up in the House this week. The bill has nearly half the House as co-sponsors, giving supporters hope that momentum for a new law would save other Spitfires and Mr. Eds. The same, unfortunately, cannot be said for many other horses in the U.S. , due to the lucrative overseas market for horse meat. Horses are being sold at livestock auctions with no restrictions on how the horses purchased can be used. Additionally, wild horses, a symbol of our American west, are being rounded up and sold under the guise of population control. Already the population of wild horses has decreased by 25,000 in the last thirty-five years. Each year in the three foreign-owned U.S. horse-slaughter houses, 90,000 horses are slaughtered and processed as food for use in markets throughout Europe and Asia . Yet, Americans do not eat horse meat. After all, the horse is more than just an animal to our country. It is a beloved literary figure, a character in a movie and a symbol of adventure. Why then, do we allow the slaughter of our horses for overseas consumption? The answer is that economic interests are trumping public attitudes. But there are ways to change the current status quo. Legislation is working its way through Congress with support and guidance from the Humane Society of the U.S. that would prevent horses from being sold for use as food. Known as the “American Horse Slaughter Protection Act” (H.R. 503), this legislation would ban the sale or transfer of horses for consumption and also prevent the round up of wild horses for slaughter. As an original cosponsor of this bill, I am a strong supporter of the effort to protect horses throughout our country. Currently 194 Congress members have cosponsored the legislation, building expectations that the House of Representatives may consider H.R. 503 this summer. It will take significant public pressure to ensure that these majestic creatures are not killed and sold for food. And when he got older and was no longer useful as a stallion for breeding, he was slaughtered for human consumption. … That began this drive to end horse slaughter in our country. You can liken it to Barbaro. Look at the concern our country has had over this horse who hurt himself racing for us. … In fact, the owners of Barbaro sent out a letter to every congressman and [congress]woman in the House, "Would you eat Barbaro?" It's handwritten letters that still affect our representatives. Congressman [John] Spratt [D-S.C.] said it's the — what did he call it — the butterfinger letters. He said, "It's the letters you can see a housewife maybe sat down and had butter on her fingers, and there are smudges on a handwritten letter." It is a brave documentary that uncovers the atrocities we are doing to the animals. I can assure the FBI that my sis and I will never promote anything unlawful. (Also, we are grateful to the FBI for protecting us from our stalkers). All this aside, this DVD is a must see. I made my stepson, family, friends, actually, everyone see this DVD because we owe this to the tortured animals and the people who went to jail trying to expose this cruelty. "BEHIND THE MASK" should be humane education, as we have not learned a thing from the Holocaust when we are not able to extend ourselves not only beyond our race, but beyond our species. As evolved spiritual beings, we should help those who have less than us, not take advantage of them. It’s going to look a bit unusual to the customs officer when two Best Friends volunteers arrive in Beirut. Their baggage consists almost entirely of … kitten food! Really! Lebanon has RUN OUT OF KITTEN FOOD altogether. Maggie from BETA (Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the only humane society in the entire country, called us yesterday in an emergency. No kitten food. And nothing available from other countries in the region. We tried our connections in other countries, too – Turkey, Cyprus, Greece. Nothing! And while there’re tons, literally, just across the border in Israel, it’s impossible to bring it in from there, either. We’re aiming to set up a supply from Western Europe, but that will take time. And the kittens can’t wait. So when our veterinarian and vet tech arrive, they’ll be carrying 175 pounds of kitten food – just enough to keep the younger cats eating for the next week or two – and lots of medicine and other veterinary supplies for both cats and dogs. It’s all part of the continuing urgency to get 300 dogs and cats to safe new homes. (There are still people threatening to poison the dogs at their temporary refuge.) That means getting them out of the country and into good new homes. Then Maggie and her colleagues can rebuild their damaged shelters and get back to their lifesaving humane work. ** And that’s why we need your help so urgently at http://middleeast.bestfriends.org. ** LIFTING THE BLOCKADE. The Best Friends Emergency Fund has collected $145,351 since we started getting requests for help from rescue groups in Lebanon and Israel. Of this, $58,322 has gone for the direct care of the animals in the region. It’s been a huge help. And we’re now saving as much as possible to pay for the evacuation and adoption effort. But we’re estimating an additional $200 for each dog or cat brought out of the country. So any amount, large or small, that you can contribute, will be a great help.
