transcender
let me take you f/ thor transcender on keyboards
About two minutes through this charming tune I couldn't stop hearing a backwards electric guitar (which ain't there)...then I noticed the stated presence of "thor transcender" and started wondering when keyboards would show up...about three minutes when the lead comes in with the keyboards I said, a-HA! It ain't backwards, but YES that's what I was longing for...yet another charming, beguiling, soulful tune from transcenderarts...

Steve Ison
If I Met You Again
I WOULD LOVE to see Mr. Ison in a place like Abbey Road Studio 2 with a producer like George Martin or Geoff Emerick...but every time I voice such an opinion I can just sense Steve rolling his eyes at my lunacy...here's a self-recordist who really doesn't want to be anything other than what he is...he does it masterfully, I confess...I can't help but think that a few of the "right steps" could result in million-selling records, fame, and world tours...but I don't think Steve really gives a damn about whether any of that ever happens for him. THE MUSIC IS THE MESSAGE. I hear you, Steve. SOUL OVER SHEEN!

Dick Aven
'Round Midnight
There's some indescribable difference to me between great sound and nasty sheen. This recording is an example of the "good kind" in my book. Well performed and recorded, sounds great, but the underlying SOUL of this overdubbed but live-sounding performance is the whole point of the track. In Mr. Aven we have a true artist who has committed his adult life to his craft and who I'd put up against any sax player anywhere. Don't let his humorous antics fool you - he's thoroughly serious about being the best damn musician he can be, and I enjoy the time I spend at his page.

Friends
Gotta be careful 'bout the Friends you choose, as Phlegm makes clear in this SOULFULLY honest pseudo-country-grunge tune. I'll be candid (as always, lol) and say that I have a tough time knowing what to make of a significant portion of Phlegm's musical catalog due to its...well...vulgarity...yet perhaps we have here another "poster boy" for SOUL OVER SHEEN...one man's take on confronting reality and baring his soul in a sincere and talented artistic fashion, using any and all tools available to capture the moment...rock on, Phlegm!

Larree
Blue Jay Way
One key to SOULFULLNESS is simply to be, unabashedly, yourself...Larree constantly puts SOUL OVER SHEEN in his songs, in ways which range from throwing one mic up to record an impromptu full band jam to provocatively tossing around the F-Word despite the knowledge that many folks prefer to keep things a bit more polite...but consistent honesty in lyrical and musical content is the hallmark of this station, so welcome aboard, Larree, and watch yer goddamned language, will ya?

Eric Lichter
California
Eric is truly a "musician's musician" and I wish he had the time and inclination to participate in this online community. But he has taken a step which I both envy and fear, that of the commercial studio owner...he does an amazing job of bringing his own musical vision to life when he has the time and opportunity, and is earning his living by helping folks who don't quite have his all-around skills to bring their own visions to fruition. I'm glad for their sake that he's able to do that, but I sincerely look forward to the day when folks realize that Eric's talents are sufficient that he should have the opportunity to work solely on his own art, which is the epitome of SOUL OVER SHEEN.

Auset
In the Middle of the End
Auset and her husband, Brad Sarno, join forces to produce absolutely beautiful and atmospheric recordings. Brad is an excellent pedal steel player as well as a designer and seller of some rack gear AND operates a mastering business. To me the beautiful work they do provides a great example of how great gear can lead to great sounds and still represent SOUL OVER SHEEN. It's a pleasure to welcome them and their bandmates to this station.

"M&P" - or Maria and Paul for the uninitiated - wear their politics on their sleeves and bash us over the head with their compassion, hoping we'll FINALLY get the message and acknowledge not only the SOULFULLNESS of ourselves, but of the other living creatures on this planet (and beyond?)...another absolutely honest artist who puts it all out there, come hell or high water, kicking ass in the name of gentleness (lol)...my favorite tough broad and her rockin' axeman are warmly welcomed to this station...

I stumbled onto a charming 4-track-cassette-sounding acoustic tune of Tom's early in my IAC experience. That song is no longer posted and I can't remember the title, but I stopped by his page today for the first time in a year and am absolutely astonished by this SOUL OVER SHEEN tune. Tom is a real talent and I'm compelled to figure out how I can hear more of his work...

Horus8 & The Werewolves
In The City
I'd like to say something profound that demonstrates my deep understanding of Horus8 and his fanged hirsute associates. Something like how instead of turning away from the ugliness in the world he embraces it, thrusting it noisily and without reluctance in the faces of those of us who would prefer to pretend it didn't exist. But I'm not sure I do understand anything more than that he always puts SOUL OVER SHEEN.
